York County Safety Council

The York County Safety Council, formed in 2010, began as a partnership between York County Economic Development (YCED) and the South Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership (SCMEP). The council, brought about as a suggestion of a local industry leader, was formed to strengthen the existing synergy already in place with York County industry safety professionals.

Teresa Curtice, Existing Industry Manager with YCED and Rhonda Huskins, Regional Vice President with SCMEP were already working together to strengthen York County industries and immediately saw this as an opportunity to take their efforts to the next level.

Meetings are hosted by members in their local facilities. Topics range, covering anything from active shooter response training in cooperation with local law enforcement to York County Emergency Management updates, OSHA updates, as well as best practices for disaster planning and response. Many meetings traditionally conclude with a plant tour, allowing professionals a peek inside other industries.

What members and partners have to say about their experience with the Safety Council:

If you have not attended a York County Safety Council meeting I encourage you to attend. You will find a wonderful group of people that represent Safety, Management, HR and Quality Control from the manufacturing and service companies that call York County home. It is a place to discuss the challenges our sites face, as well as a sharing of best practices and innovations, with the shared goal of taking the safety of our facilities to the next level. I have found many an inspiration for improvements for my site while visiting other member sites. More importantly, I have found a network of like-minded safety professionals with years of experience and knowledge that are never more than an email or phone call away. I have never enjoyed any meeting so much!

I find these meetings to be very beneficial to local business. We can hear what is going on, what the important issues are so we can prepare, and benchmark with other companies on best practices. Excellent Program!

“I have been blown away with the success of this group. We saw the potential that was there, but the success of this group largely lies in each of the members – they take an active role in making it something worthwhile.”

Rhonda Huskins, Regional Vice President with SCMEP
